About Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach (OB to locals) is the most independent and self-consciously quirky beach neighborhood in San Diego. It's a small, dense community at the western end of the I-8 freeway, known for its long pier (one of the longest concrete piers on the West Coast), its dog beach (one of the first in the country), the Wednesday farmers market on Newport Avenue, and its laid-back hippie/surfer culture. OB has resisted big-box retail and chain dining for decades and the Newport Avenue commercial strip is almost entirely independent.
